Beijing open meet = practice OlympicsMarch 10, 2008
|
---|
Beijing will test its Olympic facilities and procedures with the “China Athletics Open,” a four-day meet with all of the Games stadium events scheduled May 22-25.
Qualifying rounds are included in the eight-session May meet though not as many as are scheduled in August.
Women’s 3000m steeplechase in the China Open has heats at 1040 Friday, May 23; the final is 2040 on May 24.
The May competition offers an opportunity to compete at the Olympic stadium with conditions similar to the Games.
This is helpful to likely Olympians; for other athletes it can offer a special memory of a near-Olympic experience. For all it’s an opportunity to achieve Olympic entry standards.
As in August for the Olympics, each event of the China Athletics Open will have its own medal ceremony.
All athletes of IAAF member federations will be accepted. But athletes must be entered by their national federations (example: Athletics Australia or USA Track and Field).
Some athletes may get travel money from their sponsors such as shoe companies. Others may pay their own way.
Costs seem reasonable: $80 per day housing with three meals included. Roundtrip (May 18-27) airfares now start at $639 from San Francisco and $1104 from Newark.
Marathon and Racewalk have similar open competition in April testing road courses, traffic, and Olympic stadium finishes. Much more Beijing meet information available at:
