The 3-meet requirement creates a list (above) of 10 athletes. To get an 11-athlete total, WAF rules have this provision: "The IAAF reserves the right to invite a maximum of 1 wild-card Athlete per event." The question then arises: Who shall be invited?
One possibility is to invite an athlete with only 2 scoring meets but a high score such as Tatyana Petrova of Russia with 24 points. Another option is to invite a very fast steepler with only one scoring meet such as Docus Inzikuru of Uganda with 9:19.51 or Alesia Turava of Belarus with 9:20.16.
Restricting the wild-card provision to one athlete can encourage athletes participation in WAF-qualifying meets at all four levels: Golden League, Super Grand Prix, Grand Prix, and Area Permit. Ideally, it would also encourage meet managers and their national federations to offer a variety of events -- including women's steeplechase.
Interestingly, world leader Wioletta Janowska of Poland with a 9:17.15 time last month and three WAF scoring meets, is not atop the scoring list. Not all meets score the same. A win at Monaco last week earned 20 points but in some other meets only 6. | Return to News
