62 Girls Enter Australian Steeple ChampsDecember 4, 2006
|
---|
It's springtime in the Southern Hemisphere; major meets are scheduled there through March. Athletes from all over the Australian continent will meet December 7-10 in Sydney for that nation's All-Schools / Youth Athletics Championships.
Four steeplechase races, all finals at 2000m distance, are scheduled for girls. On December 7 there are 23 entered in the "under age 15" race at 1905 hours and 13 in the "under 16" race at 1915. On December 9 the "under 17" race has 14 entrants at 1640 hours and the "under 18" race has 12 at 1650.
The AUS Champs entry list includes young ladies who are candidates for Steeple Report world list with marks under 7 minutes, notably Jessica Gilfillan with an age 14 world-leading 6:38 time. But Gilfillan is also listed for 800m and 3000m flat races; other top steeplers are also listed for multiple events -- which may put records out of reach during this meet.
Home-schooled athletes can compete in the school championships of Australia -- but not New Zealand. So Melissa Murrihy of NZL, who in 2003 ran the age 12 world-best 6:59.22 for 2000m steeple, cannot compete in her own nation's school champs on December 9 at Christchurch. | Return to News
