2005 USA Championships ScheduleApril 7, 2005

The schedule of events has been announced for USA Championships at Carson, between Los Angeles and Long Beach, California. This is the meet that determines the USA team going to Helsinki in August for the 2005 World Championships which includes women's steeplechase.
At Carson the first round of women's steeple is scheduled for 6:30pm Friday, June 24. The final is 2:46pm Sunday, June 26. The "A" entry standard is 10 minutes 13 seconds, a time achieved last year by seven USA athletes.
The "B" standard is 10:18, used if there are not enough "A" standard steeplers entered to fill the targeted field size of 24 athletes. Eight other USA athletes achieved the "B" standard in 2004, making a total field of 15 -- if all of them entered. With only 15, there would be no need for the qualifying round according to USATF Rule 166(c) that specifies heats if more than 18 athletes report for competition.
However, there is one additional requirement -- nullifying all but three of the USA qualifiers: Qualifying times for entry must have been achieved between 19 July 2004 and 19 June 2005, an eleven-month envelope. No significant meets in the USA included a 3000m steeple for the first eight of those eleven months. (The three qualifiers got their times later last summer in Europe. The rest must do so this spring.)
JUNIORS TOO
The USA Junior Championships will be contested concurrently at the same venue. This meet is for athletes who will remain under 20 through the last day of 2005.
The junior 3000m steeplechase will be a finals-only event at 3:55pm Saturday, June 25. There should be no need for an earlier qualifying round because the entry standard is 10:50.14, a time surpassed in last year's Junior Champs by only three athletes..
Times of 7:05.14 in the 2000m steeple are an alternative qualifier. Five USA athletes achieved such times last year in a USATF-sanctioned meet on June 19 but that date lies outside the juniors qualifying period -- 25 June 2004 through 19 June 2005.
