IAAF Ages for Junior and Youth World Championships
January 14, 2008
“Youth” is now defined by IAAF Rule 141 as “Any athlete of 16 or 17 years” on 31st December in the year of competition. Only those ages can compete in the World Youth Champion-ships 8-12 July 2009 in Italy. (Earlier the quoted wording was “any athlete under the age of 18 years.”)

“Junior” is now defined by Rule 141 as “Any athlete of 18 or 19 years” on 31 December in the year of competition. (Earlier the quoted wording was “any athlete under the age of 20 years.”)

Athletes ages 16-19 can compete in the 2008 World Junior Championships July 13-18 in Poland because IAAF Technical Rule 203 also permits age 16-17 Youths to enter this meet.
