Remaining Opportunities for Non-Collegiate Steeplers to Get Qualifying Marks
June 3, 2005
As top NCAA Division 1 athletes prepare for their national collegiate championships, USA post-graduate women steeplers seek comparable high-level competition to get qualifying marks for the 2005 World Championships. But their event is not included in USA Grand Prix meets.
Some may travel on their own to overseas GP meets, which do include women steeplers, as they have done in the past. Others seek less costly alternatives at non-GP domestic meets. Steeplechics "Calendar" section has for weeks displayed entry information for such USA meets on June 5 in California, June 8 in Michigan, and June 11 in Illinois.
Now the women's steeplechase has been added to a meet in the Eastern U.S. which has a large steepler population. And that meet looks good enough to draw entrants from other regions.
The famed "Boston High Performance" series has added a women's 3000-meter steeplechase to the fourth meet in its 2005 series. It's on June 11 at Bentley College in Waltham on the western edge of Boston. Start time is currently projected for 7:30 p.m. although meet director Kevin Curtin says a slight schedule adjustment could follow the close of entries at 6 p.m. deadline on June 9.
http://www.directathletics.com/view_meet.html?meet_hnd=2749&sport=track is the URL for internet entry into the meet at Waltham, about 20 kilometers west of Boston's Logan Airport. Waltham is on the "Fitchburg"" commuter rail line with frequent departures from Boston's "North Station."
