IAAF RankingsJune 4, 2005
|
---|
Every two weeks since January 2001 the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has been posting updated versions of its "Rankings" for each standard event. Women's steeplechase has been included as of 2005.
See http://www.iaaf.org/worldrankings/how.html for full, interesting details about the IAAF ranking method and rules that use steeple times plus placing in races weighted to reflect the difficulty of different competitions. Below is a brief digest for steeplechase.
In each race an athlete earns a "Result Score" based on her finish time as rated by the IAAF Scoring Tables of Athletics. She also earns a "Placing Score," generally for up to eight places in a race (but 12 places in Olympic Games or World Championships).
Result Score plus Placing Score = Performance Score. Ranking Score = Average of Performance Scores.
Event Rankings determine athletes qualified to compete in the IAAF year-end competition, the World Athletics Final (WAF) which offers big rewards. Rankings can also influence meet directors choice of entrants for big meets.
Several factors can explain an athlete's absence from the top of the rankings or even total omission from the rankings for her event.
One factor is too few races to accumulate high performance scores. The best women's steeplechase example is the current world record holder who has rarely run the event.
Another factor is too few elite meets that provide high placing scores and where a strong field can create fast times (high result scores). A notable example is USA which, despite having more lady steeplers than other nations, does not include their event in any Grand Prix meet held in the USA.
Below, to illustrate rankings, are the top 25 women steeplers in the IAAF ranking list of 30 May 2005. Columns from left to right are ranking score, athlete name, (birth year), nation. The closeness of some scores suggest that positions could change with a single race.
The complete list at IAAF website provides 50 ranked athletes in each event.
