USA 2006 Collegiate ChampionshipsFebruary 28, 2006
|
---|
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has three divisions -- each with its own championship meet and qualifying requirements.
Division 1 has the largest schools; its 2006 championship meet is June 7-10 in Sacramento, California. Steeplers will qualify from one of four regional meets May 26-27: East at Greensboro, North Carolina, Mideast at Knoxville, Tennessee; Midwest at Austin, Texas; and West at Provo, Utah.
For entry to Div. 1 regionals, lady athletes must have run 10:50 for the 3000m steeplechase this spring season. At regionals they run only once -- a final determined by performance in a timed section. In the national championship meet they run a qualifying heat, usually on the first day, with a rest on the second day and a final on the third.
Division 2 has no regional meets; the championship is May 25-27 at Emporia, Kansas -- heats at 1750 on May 25, final at 1700 on May 27. Athletes must run 10:20 for assured entry but few do so; the start list is filled with the best runner with race times of 11:27 or better.
Division 3 also has no regionals; its championship meet is May 25-27 at Lisle, Illinois. The steeplechase is a finals-only race at 1800 on May 26. Assured entry requires a qualifying 10:48 performance; provisional entry requires 11:20.
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics includes small colleges in Canada as well as USA. The NAIA conducts a championship meet May 25-27 in Fresno, California. Women's 3000m steeple standard "A" (assured entry) is 11:25; the "B" standard is 11:45. | Return to News
