Reigning World Champion Docus Inzikuru of Uganda won the Commonwealth Games steeplechase in 9:19.51 on March 22 at Melbourne, Australia, where places 2 through 5 achieved personal best marks.
Inzikuru and Australia Melissa Rollison ran side-by-side in the second half of the 3000m race. Rollison kept increasing the pace in an unsuccessful effort to pass, running outside for extra distance but still lowering her AUS record to 9:24.39.
Kenya's Jeruto Kiptum, third at the 2005 World Champs, was among some top steeplers who succumbed to the punishing pace and failed to match their previous efforts.
