Steeplers in Cross-Country
November 25, 2006
Some top USA college women steeplers showed their Autumn fitness yesterday (Nov 20) in the Division 1 Cross Country Championship of National Collegiate Athletic Association.

In this 6000-meter race at Terre Haute, Indiana, the first USA citizen finisher in 20:37.9 was Colorado's Jenny Barringer who won the NCAA 3000m steeple championship in 9:53.04 last June. At Terre Haute she was second to Sally Kipyego, one of four Kenyans running for Texas Tech.

A second USA steepler, placing sixth with 20:53.8 in the 253-runner field, was Kassi Andersen of Brigham Young -- back from a long recovery after bring run over by a truck in September 2004 (reported in SR 295). She won the 2003 NCAA steeple in 9:44.95.

Two other sub-10 minute steeplers at Terre Haute were Cassie Hunt (9:55.75) of Illinois and Emily Brown (9:56.92) who ran the 6000-meter course in 21:30.9 and 21:17.6 respectively.

Other 2006 NCAA championship steeple finalists were seen at Terre Haute: 10:01.04 Nicole Bush of Michigan State, 10:08.12 Amy Fowler of BYU, and 10:17.44 Arianne Field of Michigan. Their 6000-meter cross country times, respectively, were 22:09.0, 21:47.8, and 21:44.9.

Stanford's Kathleen Fowler ran a 10:07.55 steeple in 2004; she returned yesterday with a 21:55 cross country effort.
