Steepling safety series – Part OneJanuary 1, 2010
|
---|
Track and field is a complex sport of varied events with related equipment – plus many athletes and officials sharing limited space for long hours and sometimes multiple days.
There has been a trend toward more events and athletes, plus more equipment and rules – increasingly more complex though not necessarily so. There have also been injuries that seem preventable with simple procedures and resources.
One example is the wrong height setting of hurdles, notably the heavy and unmovable barriers used for steeplechase. This happened in 2009 at a venue where the same error occurred at previous meets. It can be prevented, simply – by verifying the height setting with an inexpensive yardstick:
Steeplers Safety Solution Simple:
Pictured yardstick is 36 inches long, the height for men’s steeple barriers. It has a mark at 30 inches, the women’s barrier height.
This “equipment,” not mentioned in rules, costs less than a dollar, and has been used for years at some USA meets (Fields Photo)
