World Champs Update
January 23, 2007
The orientation of a track and its finish line dictate the location of the unmovable water jump which can at some hours cause sunlight to be in the eyes of steeplers as they go over that barrier -- increasing the risk of injury. The least sun-sensitive location for that barrier has steeplers facing north as at USA universities of Tennessee and Washington which have tracks with an east-west orientation and steeple finish line at west end of the north straightaway.

The 2007 World Championships will be at Nagai Stadium in Osaka, Japan. Nagai has a north-south orientation with main finish at southwest corner, positioning water jump on the north turn. That means steeplers face west at the water jump barrier where the sun might cause problems if race time was mid-to-late afternoon.

However, at Osaka, heats for both men and women are scheduled in morning; finals are in mid-evening. That and Nagai roof line should enhance athletes vision at the water jump.

For Osaka, women's 3000m steeple first round (heats) are at 1040 Saturday, August 25; the final is at 2020 Monday, August 27. Men's steeple first round is 1000 Sunday, August 26; the final is 2055 Tuesday, August 28.
