Steepling Safety Series – Part ThreeApril 1, 2010
|
---|
Be aware of the actual water pit length. Rules of the IAAF and member organizations such as UK Athletics plus USA Track and Field specify 3.66m (12 feet) including the hurdle – three words
missing for decades from the NCAA rulebook until 2008. By then
many campus pits had been constructed and some remain too long.
Further, the water could be too deep in a pit constructed via NCAA rules which add three extra words, a minimum of, just prior to “70 centimeters” which (without those extra words) has been the specified depth for decades in the IAAF rules.
Interestingly, the IAAF now recommends that all new pits be more shallow – 50 centimeters – which is echoed by UK rule 117 (Steeplechases) but not yet by the comparable USATF rule 169.
