Qualifying for the World Athletics Final is based on performance points earned at certain IAAF meets such as Permit or Grand Prix. Lady steeplers in some parts of the world must travel overseas, some at their own expense, for an opportunity to earn such points. A significant example is USA which may have more women steepling than any other nation -- but has so far not included their event in any of the Grand Prix or Permit meets held each year in the USA.
Athletics New Zealand recently announced that lady steeplers will be included in a IAAF Permit meet 21 Feb 2007 at Christchurch. Raylene Boyle, current manager of NZL high-performance program, was quoted saying that the event will offer "a huge advantage" by not having the cost of travel abroad to gain points. Australia and New Zealand have steeplers with World Championship qualifying times. | Return to News
