Steeple Pioneer Lisa Nye a Favorite in USA Half Marathon Trail Champs
June 11, 2010
Steeple pioneer Lisa Nye is being described as a favorite in the USA Half Marathon Trail Championships on June 13 at Bend, Oregon.

Nye placed in the top three at five consecutive USATF national champions from 1999 through 2003. She won in 2001, was runner-up in 1999, 2000, and 2002 -- and third in 2003 with her personal best of 9:49.14 for 3000m steeple.

She placed sixth at Brisbane, Australia, in the 2001 Goodwill Games -- top global meet before women's steepling was added to World Championships in 2005.

On 26 July 2001 in a meet at Eugene, Oregon, Nye lowered the USA record for 2000m steeplechase to 6:29.66 -- bettering the previous record of 6:30.83 by Leslie of Boston AA on 31 July 1998. Nye's record survived until 28 July 2005 when Ann Gaffigan ran 6:29.2 at Eugene.

Nye, now age 41, is a high school teacher and mother of two children.

The Half Marathon Trail Championships course is described as a 13.1 mile loop with a net gain and loss of approximately 1,000 feet in elevation. A prize purse of $3,000 is sponsored by Visit Bend.
