via Akron U. website:

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell has named Bridget Franke as the Zips' women's distance and cross country coach. Her hiring is pending approval by the University's Board of Trustees.

"We are very fortunate to have a person with the status and significant experiences of Bridget Franek joining our program," Mitchell commented. "She can make an important impact on our program and our team is looking forward to working with her."

"Throughout my life, track and field has made such a significant impact in my life, the incredible people I've met, places I've been, and the inspiration it has given me to pursue my personal potential," said Franek. "I could not be more excited for the opportunity to share my experiences and help create similar experiences for the athletes on this team. Even more specifically, the chance to join such a nationally renown team like the one here at the University of Akron is a huge honor for me."

In 2010 Franek graduated from Penn State and won the NCAA steeple, finishing 13 seconds ahead of runner-up Emma Coburn, then moved to Eugene where she joined Oregon Track Club.

In 2011 Franek was runner-up to Coburn by lees than a second in USA Championships

In 2012 Franek achieved her personal best 9:29.52 for 3000m steeplechase -- placing fourth in Aviva Grand Prix meet in London where on August 4 she ran 9:29.86 in an Olympic Games heat -- advancing to the final.

At Eugene on 16 March 2013 Franek ran 2000m steeplechase in 6:19.09 which is the fastest USA time for that event on the All-Time World List maintained by Peter Larsson of Sweden.
