Steeplers vs. Road Racers
March 21, 2005
by David Monti, Race Results Weekly
Three of America's top women steeplechasers will run in the U.S. Women's 8km Road Race Championship at New York City on March 26. The race will start and finish on the new Mondo track at Icahn Stadium, the $45 million IAAF class-I track facility nearing completion on Randalls Island.
The steeplers are Briana Shook, 3000m SC American record-holder at 9:29.32; Ann Gaffigan, 2004 USA Champ with a 9:39.35 Personal Best; and Carrie Messner with 9:49.40 PB. They will face the nation's best 5000m, 10,000m and marathon runners. Deena Kastor, multiple American record holder and Olympic marathon medalist, headlines the field.
The race winner will receive at least $5,000 plus a $1,000 bonus if she runs under 25:30. There is more information about this event at http://www.nyrr.org/race/2005/usa8k/raceday.php
