Youth meets revive shorter distances for USA steeple
March 17, 2008
In years 1988-94 the global distance for women steeplers was 2000m; a popular variant was 1500m. Both distances were used for high school and college competition. But during 1995-98, as rules changed the women’s distance to 3000m, shorter races became scarce in USA though more common in Canada, Europe, and Southern Hemisphere.

In the new millennium those shorter distances have been reported in USA by colleges in Ohio and Florida – plus high school meets in Arizona, Florida, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Also: summer youth meets of AAU and USATF now include 23-barrier 2000m steeple (though we think 1500m with 16-barriers is a better choice).
