Women's steeplechase, now included in World Championships and Olympic Games, will be part of the big international meets in September -- and their cash rewards.
The W3000m steeple will be run at 1435 Saturday, 9 September 2006, in the "World Athletics Final" at Stuttgart, Germany. This meet, offering finals-only competition, will have a 12-runner field based on individual rankings in the IAAF World Athletics Tour -- a series of 24 Grand Prix meets in different cities of the world.
Rankings, periodically displayed at the IAAF website, are determined by a combination of meet status and individual performances. Tour points can also be earned by performances in 30 "Continental Permit" meets this year.
One week after Stuttgart, the 2006 "IAAF World Cup in Athletics" will be contested September 16-17 at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece. Women's steeplechase has also been added to this meet with IAAF paying prize money to eight finishers. Individual event winners get US $30,000; second place $15,000; third place $10,000; fourth place $7,000 and so forth.
But women's steeple is included in few meets designated as qualifiers for IAAF ranking (none yet in USA, a nation that appears to have more steeplers than any other). USA lady steeplers may still need to go overseas to earn entry into the big September competitions. Traveling at their own expense focuses their attention on steeple meets that are close in dates and distance.
A model pairing occurs in the Czech Republic: Zlata Tretra Golden Spike, a Grand Prix meet May 30 at Ostrava, and the Josef Odlozil Memorial (permit meet) June 5 at Prague. Both include 3000m women's steeple during their evening competition program. | Return to News
