This meet has for years annoyed lady steeplers in varied ways such as changing distance, selection vs. entry, scant recognition, low barrier, short pit, inconsistent rulings, slim funding, flawed entry standards, useless heats. This year was similar but again the athletes prevailed -- with a cautious pace in the final for surprising results.

Without American record-holder Briana Shook and veteran champ Elizabeth Jackson (neither entered --for reasons not announced) pre-race favorite roles went to six ladies with personal bests under 10 minutes for 3000m steeple. Only one of them, winner Lisa Galaviz, broke 10 for the final in 80-degree heat where they were held at the start twice as long as the race. As a group that speedy six averaged 22.3 seconds slower than their bests.

After running heats not needed, the pack seemed weary and unwilling to challenge USA 2006 leader Carrie Messner before she faded at 2400 meters. Such a tactical race with an inevitable finish sprint brought some new faces to the front, notably Kristin Anderson (2005 NCAA Division 2 champ) with her first-ever sub-10 effort close to winner Lisa Galaviz.

Trina Cox, the 2006 Division 2 champ, took fourth behind veteran Delilah DiCrescenzo; and NAIA Champ Amanda Kuca led the second half of the field.

USATF Junior National Champs, 23 June 2006 I- Indianapolis

1-Marie Lawrence, unattached / Reno HS 10:15.26; 2-Amy Fowler, Brigham Young Univ 10:18.88; 3-Katelyn Bowen, Weber State Univ 10:24.15; 4-Ashlyn Sinclair, Mach Los Track Club 11:29.21; 5-Meagan Hudson, Jefferson County Jets 11:41.92.

This small-field race, for athletes under age 20 throughout 2006, selects USA team entrants for the World Junior Championships in August at Beijing, China. Not entered were some good young USA steeplers, notably Lindsay Ferguson who is on the 2000m steeple World List with Lawrence. A possible reason is the 3000m distance (35 barriers) adopted by IAAF in 2004 for World Juniors although most nations use the shorter 2000m (23 barriers) for their juniors.
