Shanghai Grand Prix
September 20, 2006
Major lady steeplers and other world-class athletes will compete in China on September 23 at the Shanghai Grand Prix Meet. This elite athletics event should be an entertainment spectacle and a preview of Chinese organization for the 2008 Olympics.

Cheerleaders and music, including pop stars, will combine with major competitors from China and other nations at the huge Shanghai Stadium for a show to be televised to an audience of hundreds of millions. Tie-in events include a sport carnival and youth clinic program.

We were impressed by the Mag-Lev monorail carrying passengers 22 miles from Shanghai airport to the city's ultra-modern Pudong district at a mid-point speed of 267 miles (400+ km) per hour -- faster than takeoff ground speed for an airline jet plane.

Visiting athletes and spectators from outside Asia may be surprised by the many skyscrapers. The stadium structure include a major international hotel topped by a restaurant that gives diners a bird's eye view of the track and field far below -- similar to the "skybox" trend of some USA stadia.

A shopping mall is built into the opposite side of the stadium. Just outside the northwest gate is a 400-meter warmup track. The Chinese hosts have planned a sport carnival and youth clinic program during the meet weekend for fans to meet athletic stars from around the world.

Updated Shanghai list of entrants for women's steeplechase show 15 runners from 11 nations: Australia: Victoria Mitchell; China: Xiaofang Chen, Zhenzhu Li; Ethiopia: Mekdes Bekele; Japan: Minori Hayakari; Kenya: Salome Chepchumba, Gladys Kipkemoi; Poland: Wioletta Janowska, Katarzyna Kowalska; Romania: Cristina Casandra; Russia: Lyubov Ivanova; Sweden: Christin Johansson; Spain: Zulema Fuentes-Pila; USA: Lisa Galaviaz, Carrie Messner
