This meet's entrants included at least seven good steeplers from at least three nations: Kristin Anderson, Stephanie DeCroock, Delilah DiCrescenzo, Lisa Galaviz, Shauneen Garrahan, Meredith MacGregor, Jolanda Verstraten.
But their event was not included. Instead these steeplers were added to 51 other entrants in the 1500m run -- making a total of 58 requiring four sections.
Lisa won her section in 4:20.12; Delilah ran 4:12.85 in her section but lost -- a waste of steepling talent, including those who traveled to Europe from Canada and USA.
Regrettably, steeplers without a steeple race is too common in many meets. And part of the problem is the USA truncated track season, geared to the academic year, ending just as much of the world goes into its elite summer schedule. |
