As the pace accelerated to an unofficial 75.5 last lap, Cassie King yielded to Cassie Hunt who led over the last water jump. Barringer moved up quickly on the final straightaway but five strides from the last on-track hurdle she drifted left into Lane 1 toward Hunt, and both landed awkwardly after semi-sharing hurdle space. Barringer recovered better and sprinted home for a personal best, clasping her hands overhead as she crossed the finish line. She and six behind her achieved personal best times in this race.
Barringer is a first-year college student, age 19, and might be considered a top candidate for 2006 World Junior Championships (under age 20) if age on the date of competition was the determinant. But the rules of track and field athletics use age in the year of competition, so reaching age 20 on January 1 or 364 days later on December 31 is considered the same. Barringer reaches age 20 on 23 August 2006, after World Junior steeple, but will not be eligible to run in WJC.
However, Amy Fowler from this race remains age-eligible for WJC. Young Barringer can be consoled by now having a "B" qualifier for 2007 World Champs and 2008 Olympic Games -- and many opportunities remain for her upgrade to an "A" qualifier.
