As storm weather raged, canceling some races and postponing some to another day, needless heats were again run in women's steeple as they were last year. Finishes were crowded. In heat one the first five runners finished within 4/10 of a second; in heat two the first four finished within 2/10 of a second.

Except for last place in each heat, everyone advanced to a 14-runner final scheduled for Saturday, June 24. Kara June, former USA Junior National Champion now with 10:12 PR, fell on a rain-soaked water-jump barrier and could not recover well enough to advance.

Without heats the final would have had 16 runners; 18 are permissible by rules. (For women's 1500m run, after the storm delay there were only 16 runners -- and all were advanced to the Saturday final without being subjected to heats.)
